Father of TD-SCDMA: TD-SCDMA to Be "Put to Sleep"

Sina Tech, 4/21/08

Former Datang Mobile chief scientist Li Shihe, commonly known as the "father of TD-SCDMA," said recently that he fears TD-SCDMA will be "put to sleep" in the near future, and called upon relevant government departments to draft a clear policy for the development of TD-SCDMA as soon as possible.

Li said that he has two reasons for predicting that his technology will be euthanized: first, he says, no other country in the world has ever conducted so many repeated tests of a communications network. If the technical problems have been solved, he says, then end-users should be allowed to pass judgment on the network. "Relying on test networks to fix technical issues is completely unprecedented," he says. Secondly, Li says, to date the relevant government departments have still not introduced any clear plan for the development of TD-SCDMA. "Nobody has stood up and said whether they're even going to use this or not, or which operator will adopt it...governmental departments are talking in riddles and playing games with people." The result, Li says, is that many manufacturers of TD-SCDMA equipment have experienced hardships, with one TD-SCDMA mobile chipset manufacturer "on the brink of bankruptcy."
