Online Video Sites Forbidden to Rebroadcast Olympics

Xinhuanet, 5/06/08

Deputy director Hu Zhanfan of China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) said at the recent "Forum on Copyright Protection for Olympic New Media" that CCTV enjoys exclusive internet and mobile video broadcast rights on the Chinese mainland and in Macau for the upcoming Olympic Games. Provincial television stations authorized to rebroadcast television coverage of the Games within the Mainland will not be permitted to retransmit or convert the television signal from CCTV's coverage for internet or mobile broadcasting, or to reauthorize any other agencies to broadcast the signal via internet or mobile platforms. SARFT will work through its internet data monitoring department to notify, warn or suspend the internet broadcasting permits of bodies or companies operating news sites, commercial sites, or other publicly owned websites with poor broadcasting records.
