Shanghai Promotes CMMB USB Dongle

CCID, 5/16/08

According to a source close to Shanghai Media Group (SMG), Shanghai will heavily promote CMMB based digital mobile multimedia broadcasting. Currently, CMMB signals have covered most areas within the outer ring road, with broadcasts of 5 TV channels. The source also commented that the most popular terminals are CMMB chip-embedded GPS terminals and USB TV dongles.

Permian (Shanghai) Co., Ltd and Future Waves Pte Ltd who provided USB TV dongle solutions for SMG's mobile phone TV are in talks with several electronics brands concerning authorization.

However, an industry insider believes that the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's (SARFT) initial plan of implementing CMMB in 37 cities before the Olympics was over ambitious. More realistically, the DAB based network that had been built earlier in Olympics-related cities might eventually fulfill China's commitment of providing mobile TV service during that period.
