China Telecom, Qualcomm Sign CDMA Deal

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has announced a strategic tie-up with wireless telecommunications research firm Qualcomm to use the latter's CDMA technology in the mobile network it is acquiring from China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH).

Post-restructuring, Qualcomm will get about 4% in licensing fees from patents it licenses in CDMA2000 and WCDMA. It will also get royalties from China Unicom for all 3G WCDMA phones it sells.
