The9 Wins to Operate Shanghai IPTV Gaming Channel

CCID, 6/05/08

According to an informed source, Chinese online game developer and operator The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY) has won the rights to operate Shanghai IPTV's gaming channel, with trial operation starting on June 1. However, the technical limitations of current set-top boxes mean that only a number of small Java games can be provided, with payment being made via the telecom network. It is understood that The9 servers crashed due to the extra load of the service. More complex games and those from The9 partners will not be made available until new set-top boxes are rolled out.

Shanghai IPTV's new set-top boxes will cost over RMB 2,000 and will provide almost PC-like functionality. Shanghai Telecom is to provide them free of charge in order to encourage use.
