China Mobile to Donate 50% of TD-SCDMA Handsets

The Beijing News, 6/27/08

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) president Wang Jianzhou has announced that of the 200,000 TD-SCDMA mobile phones in China Mobile's second round of handset procurement, 100,000 will be donated to Olympic volunteers, with each handset containing a USIM card with RMB 180 of credit. Wang went on to say that an additional 20,000 handsets would be used to provide foreign tourists coming to Beijing for the Olympics with rental access to the TD-SCDMA network. The details of this plan are still being formulated and more specific information will be released in July, but China Mobile has stated that it will offer favorable pricing to foreign users.
