China Mobile Introduces New Billing System for Fetion

China Communications, 7/25/08

Reliable sources claim China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has made technical changes to improve the back-end billing system of its Fetion instant messaging software. The new system uses technology developed by Huawei and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) and can charge different fees to different kinds of Fetion SMS and data traffic. The system will begin its testing and evaluation phase in September.

According to a source at China Mobile, the Fetion service is currently offered to customers as either a monthly plan or on a pay-as-you-go basis. Because of the proliferation of available plans, users are unclear about fees and charges actually being generated. Once the new billing system is online, China Mobile will simplify and rationalize its billing system.
