Id5 Sued for Invasion of Privacy

Oriental Morning Post, 8/12/08

A Nanjing resident has sued a site that provides "personal identification inspection services", for invasion of privacy. The site in question, Id5.com, allows users to input a person's name and ID number and immediately check whether the information is valid. The verification information is sent to the user';s mobile phone via SMS in exchange for a RMB 5 fee automatically deducted from the user's telephone account. On its main page, Id5 claims it is acting under the auspices of the Online Government Services Center and the National Citizen Identity Information Center, with technology provided by Beijing GZT Network Technology. The Nanjing Xuanwu District Court has already accepted the case.
