China Communications, 8/18/08

Zhong Yiping, deputy director of China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) informatization department has revealed the company has already begun preparing its IT department for the reception of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) CDMA network. The company will prepare new tariff packages and new agreements for customers to sign in order to reduce potential problems with IT systems and ensure a stable transition.

A China Telecom figure has also stated that the company is upgrading its existing billing system, and by October all its provincial switches will be able to transfer individual billing information to a central system within a 15-minute interval, in order to enable real-time billing functionality. By June 2009, China Telecom will finish the construction of its online charging system (OCS) to provide online billing information for pre-paid CDMA users.
