China Unicom H1 2008 Profits up 107%

Chinese mobile operator China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has released its interim financial results for H1 2008, with revenues from continuing operations reaching RMB 35.14 mln, up 4% year-on-year.

H1 profit from continuing operations came to RMB 3.77 bln, up 107.1% YoY, with total profit reaching RMB 4.42 bln.

Of the total revenue for the period, service revenue was RMB 35.12 bln, up 4.0 % from the same period of last year. Of this, service revenue from the company's GSM business reached RMB 32.50 bln while service revenue from long distance, data and Internet reached RMB 2.62 bln. Revenue derived from GSM mobile value-added services increased by 21.6% over the same period of last year, and represented 24.1% of service revenue from the company's GSM mobile business.

As at 30 June 2007, Unicom had 127.6 mln GSM subscribers and 43.17 mln CDMA subscribers. Unicom is currently in the process of selling its CDMA business to China Telecom.
