Marbridge Consulting, 8/26/08

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its July 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:

Telecom revenues were RMB 69.0 bln (USD 10.2 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 467.8 bln (USD 68.8 bln), up 9.1% over the same 7-month period of 2007.

Mobile subscribers grew by 7.6 mln to 608.4 mln. A total of 402 bln SMS messages were sent during the first seven months of the year, a 22.4% increase YoY.

Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the twelfth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by under 1.3 mln to 355.1 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased slightly, by 500,000, to 278.1 mln.

Broadband added over 1.8 mln new registered users to reach 77.8 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 430,000 users, dropping to 15.5 mln.
