Government Working on Telecom Regulations

Shanghai Securities News, 8/27/08

At a conference discussing their business results, senior executives at China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) have confirmed they have taken part in government discussions over measures designed to address the lack of symmetry among Chinese telecom operators. The telecom industry restructuring that is currently underway is one of the measures designed to address this issue, and Unicom chairman and CEO Chang Xiaobing claims that discussions have also touched on both pricing as well as market share. It is currently unclear when further regulations will be announced to help level the playing field, and what scope those regulations will have.
