Taobao Opens API Platform

B2C and C2C e-commerce site Taobao announced the release of its Taobao Open Platform (TOP) today. This is an open application programming interface (API) which allows third parties to make data queries to the Taobao site. Developers and companies can develop electronic products and services using the API, and create applications based on Taobao data.

Previously, application development for Taobao, Alibaba (1688.HK) and Alipay (all subsidiaries of the Alibaba Group) was provided solely by Alibaba's software subsidiary Alisoft. This method did not allow for the range of personalization that many users have now come to expect from websites.
