Taobao Blocks Search Engines

Sina Tech, 9/08/08

B2C and C2C e-commerce site Taobao has announced the release of its latest consumer guarantee plan today, which completely blocks search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), and partially blocks search engines Google and Yahoo from crawling Taobao for merchant and product information. Taobao claims the service provides different levels of screening according to each search engine. It is designed to prevent sellers from defrauding users by abusing search optimization and keyword ranking techniques, and should help promote reliable merchants.

Knowledgeable sources claim the stricter treatment of Baidu in comparison to Google and Yahoo comes as a response to the company's battle against Taobao in the C2C sector.
