China Telecom Requires WAPI Compatibility for Wi-Fi

CCTimes, 9/18/08

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) says that it is requiring companies competing in access point (AP) bidding for its ongoing large-scale Wi-Fi hotspot construction project to make their access points compatible with WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), China's home-grown wireless LAN standard.

One access point manufacturer said that at the start of the year, China Telecom had required AP providers to switch from supporting the SNMP network management protocol to supporting the TR-069 auto-configuration protocol. The latter allows for remote administration of terminal equipment on greater scales, making convergence of fixed and mobile networks through a home network gateway easier.
