MIIT Receives State Council Approval to Issue 3G Licenses

MIIT, 12/31/08

At a meeting held earlier today, China's State Council gave approval for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to commence work on issuing licenses for 3G mobile telecommunication networks. The State Council indicated that with the telecom industry restructuring essentially complete, conditions were now suitable for issuing TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and CDMA2000 licenses, and that doing so would help stimulate internal demand, increase the competitive framework of the telecommunication industry, and allow the TD-SCDMA industry chain to mature. No indication was given on when the licenses would be issued, other than that they would be issued in an orderly manner.

Editor's Note: Earlier reports today in Chinese media suggested that 3G licenses could be issued as early as 6:00 PM Beijing time, December 31.
