China Telecom Unveils GPON Bid Results

Communications Weekly, 2/11/09

According to China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently released first-round GPON bidding results, 2,300 GPON lines will be divided among Fiberhome, Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) and Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell (ASB). The cables will undergo trials in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Hangzhou and will be based upon the deployment model used by EPON, that is GPON + xDSL, with the network to be used for group users, rather than large commercial users.

According to one source, because these are just trials of the technology, the GPON equipment will be provided to China Telecom close to zero cost.

In 2008 China Telecom deployed 4 mln EPON lines in advance of GPON as part of the national FTTx development strategy.
