China Telecom, Unicom to Launch 2D Barcodes

Communications Weekly, 2/23/09

Wu Lin, president of 2D barcode product provider Sigmatrix, has revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will launch 2D barcodes in the near future.

Another source revealed that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) also plans to enter the 2D barcode market this year, and will adopt a model similar to that used by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), which utilizes 2D barcode technology for promotion of its services. China Telecom has no plans to limit the technology to its own services and will instead provide a platform for developers to use.

In 2005, China Mobile began 2D barcode service trials in 4 cities, and has since expanded the service nationwide to nearly every provincial capital and has also transitioned to commercial use. Lin Jin, general manager of marketing for 2D barcode product supplier Imageco, stated that China Mobile released over 100 mln 2D barcodes in 2008.
