China Mobile to Invest RMB 600 Mln in TD-SCDMA Handset Production

Miao Wei, vice minister for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has stated that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) will invest RMB 600 mln in handset manufacturers to boost TD-SCDMA handset R&D and production.
Miao Wei explained that there are currently very few TD-SCDMA users and that manufacturers are reluctant to step up production for low quantity items. This means that the TD-SCDMA handsets currently available on the market lack variety, are comparatively expensive, and are of poorer quality than handsets based on other technology.
