Rumor: China Unicom, Apple Sign iPhone Deal

Shanghai Morning Post, 3/20/09

An industry source has stated that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and Apple have signed an agreement over the Apple iPhone, and both parties are currently awaiting higher-level approval before making an announcement. A spokesperson for China Unicom had no comment on the matter.

A source with knowledge of the situation revealed that the agreement came after a team of upper management from Unicom visited Apple in the US to discuss the matter. Specific details of the agreement are not clear, but the iPhone won't be released until after Unicom begins issuing numbers for its WCDMA network on May 17.
