Rumor: MIIT Sets Number Portability Schedule

Guangzhou Daily, 4/15/09

An industry insider has stated that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has finalized plans for trials of number portability in Hainan and Tianjin. The trials may begin as early as this month, and will last for 6 months, after which the system will be expanded nationwide. Another industry source revealed that from this month, the MIIT's China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR) will cooperate with China's three telecom operators to build an integrated database for number portability and perform necessary network and platform upgrades. This task is expected to take seven and a half months, and following this, the telecom operators are expected to spend another two and a half months performing network connection tests and a further one and a half months performing internal trial usage tests.
