Update: Alipay to Launch Mobile Payment Platform

Sina Tech, 5/04/09

GM Song Manyuan of Alipay's wireless division says the third-party payment platform began work on a mobile payment service at the start of 2008 that is now set, after more than a year of internal testing and fine-tuning, to be officially launched this year.

Over the last year of internal testing, Alipay set up more than 100,000 test accounts. Users will be able to bind their mobile number to an Alipay account and configure their mobile payment service, after which they will be able to make transfers and purchase goods (up to RMB 200 per transaction) in real-time by sending SMS commands to a predetermined number.

Editor's Note: A recent job posting by Alipay listed positions for several "wireless R&D engineers" and "mobile phone software engineers."
