Banks Suspend Recharge Services for WoW

DoNews, 5/05/09

Owing to the uncertainty of transition plans for 'World of Warcraft' following the June expiration of the current operator The9's (Nasdaq: NCTY) contract, most distributors have stopped ordering new game cards from The9. According to a filing from The9, the China Merchants Bank, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and the China Construction Bank, among other online banks, have also stopped providing recharge services for World of Warcraft. Sales figures from a third-party platform show a drop in sales of approximately 10% in sales of WoW game cards in April, and another decline of about 10% in sales of in-game currency.
