Taiwan Limits Scope of Telecom Investment from Mainland

Sina Tech, 5/06/09

According to the Taiwanese 'Economic Daily News,' Fu Tung-ch'eng, vice-head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Committee, said on May 5 that the first round of Mainland investment into Taiwan's telecom industry would be restricted primarily to "class-2 telecom services" such as value-added services and phone card sales. "Class-1 telecom services" including wireless and fixed-line services, will not be among the industries opened for investment in the first round.

The announcement led to industry worries that China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) plan to purchase a stake in Far EasTone could be affected by the decision.
