Rumor: Alipay Testing Mobile Payment Software

Sina Tech, 5/26/09

An industry source recently revealed that third-party payment platform Alipay has completed development on a client application for Windows Mobile smartphones. An Alipay employee said he had received an internal e-mail last weekend saying that the new mobile client will support Windows Mobile 5 and 6, and provides the three major functionalities of Alipay – payment over Taobao and other networks, account balance checking, and transaction history. At present the application is available for download only to Alipay employees; there is currently no specific timetable for when it will be publicly released.

Alipay's public relations department declined to comment on the report, saying only that the company was dedicated to responding to customer needs and improving customer experience. Reliable reports say that Alipay is also planning to develop Symbian and Java clients, as well as clients for other platforms, and may work with Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek on related projects.
