Mainland to Import USD 4.4 Bln in Taiwanese LCD Panels
Sina Tech, 6/03/09
According to Taiwanese media reports, Bai Weimin, secretary general for the China Video Industry Association (CVIA), recently stated during a flat-screen display industry cooperation forum that a group of 9 top Chinese color TV manufacturers will add an additional USD 2.2 bln in product to current procurements of Taiwanese panels, bringing the total procurement amount to USD 4.4 bln.
According to Bai, at least 50% of panels procured by mainland China this year will originate from Taiwan, with demand outstripping supply by over a 30% margin. Bai added that he hopes Taiwanese manufacturers can increase their supply capabilities, and that AU Optronics Corp will place an added focus on supplying product to mainland China rather than its currently largest market, Korea. Bai added that he also hopes to establish a common panel standard between Taiwan and mainland China in hopes of cooperatively building next-generation panel factories.
Participating in the current procurements are 9 mainland color television enterprises including Hisense (600060.SH), Haier, Skyworth Digital Holdings (0751.HK), Konka (200016.SZ, 000016.SZ), Changhong (600839.SH), TCL Multimedia (1070.HK), Panda Electronics (600775.SH; 0553.HK), SVA, and Xoceco (600870.SH).
