Government Penalizes Google China

Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, 6/20/09

The national office for China's current Internet anti-vulgarity campaign has revealed that relevant government departments informed Google representatives on the afternoon of June 18 that Google's China-based Mandarin-language site, google.cn, must temporarily cease search service of overseas websites and related keyword search functions. The government order, which is effective immediately, also requires Google.cn to remove links to any obscene, pornographic or vulgar content. The government will determine the next steps to be taken based on google.cn's compliance with the order. Google.cn representatives made a public apology regarding the matter.
