China Mobile Mobile Newspaper Growth Stagnates
Communications Weekly, 7/01/09
Facing a slowdown in mobile newspaper subscriber growth, China Mobile has convened a meeting of mobile paper cooperation partners to tackle the problem. During the meeting China Mobile's partners suggested measures such as new revenue sharing models and increasing interactivity. China Mobile is actively considering implementing these proposals.
Zheng Zhaohui, president of China Mobile's wireless value-added services platform subsidiary, Aspire Technologies, said in February 2008 that China Mobile's total number of mobile paper subscribers had reached over 30 mln. By Q3 2008, this figure had increased to approximately 41 mln.
One insider who asked to remain anonymous said that China Mobile's mobile paper subscriber growth had clearly slowed this year, with the total subscriber base remaining at roughly 40 mln. The cooperation partners are increasingly complaining that since morning and evening papers are usually included in China Mobile data packages, the great majority of mobile paper subscribers are already subscribed to China Mobile's own mobile paper services. "At present there are very few mobile paper services that have managed to attract over a million subscribers," explained one industry source.
