SARFT Reveals 2008 Chinese TV Series Statistics

At a recent press conference, Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) spokesperson Zhu Hong discussed the findings of a Department of Teleplay Administration survey of all nationwide purchases and broadcasts of TV series in 2008. The survey was successfully completed by 365 TV stations, of which one was CCTV, 32 were provincial level, 27 were provincial capital level, and 305 were local municipal level stations. In 2008, CCTV and the provincial and capital level stations made a total of 6,576 purchases of TV series (5,933 in 2007), of which 139 purchases were made by CCTV (117 in 2007), 4,096 by provincial level stations (4,410 in 2007), and 1,560 by capital level stations (1,406 in 2007). In addition, approximately 18,453 purchases were made by municipal level stations (15,926 in 2007). The total funds spent on purchase and production of TV series by CCTV, provincial, and capital level stations was RMB 5.49 bln (RMB 3.98 bln in 2007), of which RMB 1.05 bln was spent by CCTV (RMB 1.05 bln in 2007), RMB 3.47 bln by provincial level stations (RMB 2.54 bln in 2007), and RMB 533 mln by capital level stations (RMB 390 mln in 2007). Additionally, local stations spent a total of approximately RMB 438 mln on purchase of TV series (RMB 376 mln in 2007). In 2008, each TV channel broadcast an average of 2,240 hours of TV series (2,192 hours in 2007), playing an average of 6.1 hours per day (6 hours in 2007), accounting for 34.1% of stations' total broadcast hours (34.5% in 2007). During prime time between 7-10 pm, stations broadcast an average of 1.6 hours of TV series programming, accounting for 53.3% of total prime time hours (same as 2007).
