Rumor: China to Construct WiMAX Network in Second-Tier Cities

Tencent Tech, 7/22/09

Taiwanese media outlets have reported that Mainland China may have recently relaxed WiMAX restrictions and will set up a trial WiMAX network. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and local governments will select two or three cities for the trial, which may launch by the end of August, but first-tier cities will not be allowed to participate, such as to allow second-tier cities to develop wireless broadband technology. Taiwanese WiMAX solutions providers MediaTek, ZyXEL, Accton and Tecom expect to participate in the Mainland project by year's end. Most likely to participate are Airway Communications and China Security & Surveillance Technology (NYSE: CSR). China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has allocated the 700MHz frequency band for WiMAX, rather than the standard 2.5GHz band.
