Subsidized Rural Handset Sales Reach RMB 227 Mln in H1 2009

Recently released sales figures related to Chinese Ministry of Commerce's rural home appliance subsidy program show RMB 227 mln in revenue on a total of 4.25 mln mobile phones sold over the first half of this year. Among those, Nokia, Tianyu and Changhong (600839.SH) ranked in the top three for total sales, but total sales figures reported by the Haier Group and Qingdao Haier Telecom put Nokia, Haier and Tianyu as the top three. Of the 25 mobile phone manufacturers in the program, only Nokia sold more than 100,000 units, with 8 companies having reached sales of between 10,000-50,000 handsets. Four companies sold less than 100 handsets each, those being BBK, AUX, Newsmy and Zhenhua (000733.SZ), and another 5 companies - Amoi (600057.SH), Eyang, Motorola, Gaoxinqi and China Mobile Media Technology (CHMO.OB) - all sold less than 1,000 units.
