Guangdong Unicom Begins WCDMA International Roaming Tests

Guangdong Unicom has begun optimizing its network to test 3G international roaming services. China United Telecommunications Corporation (Unicom Group), the state-owned parent company of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), has now convened a national meeting regarding 3G international roaming in Guangzhou. Guangdong Unicom has already established a two-tier provincial and city-level working group to begin work on 3G international roaming performance tests and services support, particularly those performance tests required by scores of overseas 3G operators.

At the end of 2008, estimates showed there were 262 mln WCDMA users worldwide, projected to reach 1.8 bln by 2013. Currently there are 254 mobile operators in 110 countries that use the WCDMA standard.
