China Mobile to Provide RMB 6 Bln in 3G Service Subsidies

CEO Wang Jianzhou has revealed that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has not allocated any special subsidies for the development of OPhone handsets, but will include subsidies towards OPhone development among the RMB 6 bln in subsidies it has set aside for support of 3G service, most of which will be distributed in the second half of 2009.

Wang further disclosed that by year end, 238 of China's prefecture-level cities will have 3G signal coverage with a successful connection rate of at least 95%.

Wang added that China Mobile has maintained continuous contact and coordination with Apple regarding the possibility of jointly introducing the iPhone to China Mobile's customer base.
