Gehua Adds HD Programming for Beijing Users

Sina Tech, 9/29/09

Beijing cable TV network operator Gehua CATV (600037.SH) has announced that Gehua subscribers in its digital cable testing areas throughout the eight urban districts of Beijing will receive nine new HD channels, while subscribers outside the digital cable test sites and in Beijing's suburban districts will not receive all of the same programming.

Gehua launched its new "Beijing HD Interactive Digital Cable Test Site" promotion recently. The promotion offers free HD interactive set-top boxes (STBs) for select residential compounds. Gehua deputy GM Luo Xiaobu said that the promotion is strictly experimental, and that ordinary subscribers will still be required to purchase STBs. Luo revealed that Gehua is partnering with TCL (000100.SZ), Changhong (600839.SH), Skyworth (0751.HK), and other manufacturers on promoting integrated digital HDTVs that will allow owners to subscribe to HD digital cable simply by purchasing a subscriber card, with no need for a set-top box.
