Rumor: China Unicom to Expand Wi-Fi Coverage

Sohu IT, 9/30/09

A source inside China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has revealed that on October 28, the operator sent out a notice to provincial subsidiaries including Beijing Unicom and Shanghai Unicom, calling for them to increase Wi-Fi coverage. A source inside the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), when asked about whether or not Wi-Fi access would be opened up, revealed that Apple and Intel had been in discussions with the government.

Editor's Note: In a telephone interview with Marbridge today, a Unicom spokesperson reconfirmed that the first batch of iPhones to be sold in China will not have Wi-Fi functionality.
