Shanghai Telecom Launches New Online Gaming Platform

Shanghai Telecom announced its new "Game World Online" gaming platform today in partnership with upstream game developers and downstream internet café operators.
Shanghai Telecom will supply both server management for gaming companies, and broadband services for internet cafes.
Shanghai Telecom deputy GM for data networks Du Jun says the operator has no plans to develop its own internet café operations platform within the short term; rather, it plans to form partnerships with internet café management platform providers already engaged in the market.
Through its partnership with the Shanghai Internet Café Association, Shanghai Telecom has already reached initial statements of intent with more than 400 internet cafes, and plans to expand to more than 1,500 internet cafes throughout the municipality.
Du Jun added that the Game World Online platform is an experiment; if it proves successful, it may be implemented in other areas around the country by China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK). Shanghai Telecom also plans to promote the platform among its home television and mobile phone subscribers.
