Nokia Joins TD-SCDMA Camp

Sina Tech, 10/27/09

At today's tenth anniversary celebration for Nokia's Beijing product R&D center, Nokia unveiled its first TD-SCDMA handset, the Symbian S60-based Nokia 6788.

The business-style handset uses the third edition of the S60 user interface, and supports HSDPA. Nokia plans for the handset to hit the market in the fourth quarter.

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) executive VP Lu Xiangdong said the company will fully support Nokia's TD-SCDMA handset sales in China. When asked whether China Mobile held any expectations for Nokia to release an OPhone based on China Mobile's OMS, Lu replied that the answer could only be determined by Nokia's stance on the matter.

Editor’s Note: According to Tencent reports, Nokia’s TD-SCDMA R&D team leader said that the company is still in development on a number of TD-SCDMA handset models, which are expected to reach the market in stages next year. “Nokia is also currently developing TD-SCDMA OPhone handsets, but OPhone development is led by another team,” said the source. “We mainly develop Symbian-based TD-SCDMA products.”

According to the team leader, Nokia’s TD-SCDMA R&D team began forming in April of this year, bringing on a succession of TD-SCDMA R&D personnel. The team now has over 70 R&D personnel, with more hires planned.

Update: Nokia contacted Marbridge the day after we posted the above summary and denied that it had any plans to develop an OPhone at this time.
