Giant Pays RMB 49 Mln for TV Ad Time-Slot

State-run broadcaster CCTV's "Golden Resource Advertising Auction" of prime-time advertising slots for 2010 has attracted more than RMB 10.9 bln in bids, up RMB 1.71 bln, or 18.47%, over last year. Chinese online game developer and operator Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) purchased first-choice rights to the third ad block for CCTV's Xinwen Lianbo ("Evening News") for RMB 48.9 mln. According to acting VP Cheng Chen of Giant Investment Co., Ltd., Giant will invest RMB 200 mln in TV advertising on CCTV. Other reports say handwriting recognition and e-reader manufacturer Hanvon Technology signed agreements for advertising slots during weather reports in November and December 2010, and for the prime advertising slot immediately after Xinwen Lianbo in July and August; no details were available regarding the amount of its bid.
