MIIT: China Mobile TD-SCDMA Spectrum Expanded to 85 MHz

Beijing Morning Post, 11/26/09

Xie Feibo, director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) Radio Administration Bureau, revealed that the Ministry has officially granted access to another 50 MHz of spectrum for China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) TD-SCDMA network to provide better indoor coverage, increasing the total spectrum for China Mobile's 3G services to 85 MHz.

Originally, China Mobile had access to 35 MHz of spectrum (1880-1900 MHz and 2010-2025 MHz). 30 MHz of spectrum each was allocated to China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) (1940-1955MHZ and 2130-2145MHz) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) (1920-1935MHz and 2110-2125MHz). The government had already prepared to allocate additional spectrum to support China's homegrown 3G standard early on, with a total of 155 MHz of spectrum set aside for TD-SCDMA use (1880MHz-1920MHz, 2010MHz-2025MHz and 2300MHz-2400MHz).
