China's Handset Production Soars Despite Industry Downturn

At the "2009 China Mobile Phone Industry Head Annual Forum" held in Beijing today, Zhao Bo, deputy director of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) IT Industry Department, said that from November 2008 through October 2009, China's electronics industry has experienced consistent negative growth. During the same period, revenues for the telecommunications equipment manufacturing industry came to RMB 663.4 bln, down 3.4% year-on-year, and export sales totaled RMB 360 bln, down 13.7% year-on-year.
Zhao added, however, that in January 2009, handset production was the lowest in years at only 40 mln units, gradually climbing to 60 mln units in both September and October, marking new all-time highs. Zhao said that mobile handset production will exceed 600 mln units this year, a year-on-year increase of more than 7%.
