CNNIC: Tencent Gamers Account for 44% of MMOG Players

According to the China Internet Network Information Center's (CNNIC) new 2009 report on China's online gaming market, the number of Chinese Internet users that logged into an MMOG at least once a month rose 24.8% from 55 mln in 2008 to 69.31 mln in 2009.

Residences and Internet cafes remain the two most popular locations for playing online games, each being chosen by respondents 79.7% and 59.6% of the time, respectively.

Average gameplay time for Chinese online gamers was 3.1 hours, slightly more than the three-hour limit set by government health regulations.

Time-based payment methods were the most preferred by 41.9% of users. In Internet cafes, prepaid game cards were the most popular form of payment, accounting for 52.8% of users.

39.9% of Chinese MMOG users reported spending money (fees, purchasing virtual items, etc.) on online games.

Chinese MMOG users paid an average of RMB 165 in monthly gaming fees, with the largest percent (26.4%) paying between RMB 81 and RMB 150.

52.1% of users reported casual MMOGs among the most commonly played, while 47.9% reported playing MMORPGs the most.

50.5% of users reported preferring or highly preferring 3D games.

According to the survey, Tencent (0700.HK) gamers accounted for 44.2% of all MMOG users, while Shiji Tiancheng and 9You users accounted for 30.8% and 25%, respectively.

Casual games Kart Rider (Popkart) and Audition, as well as 3D MMORPG World of Warcraft, remained the top three online gaming products, with 26.6%, 21.7% and 16.9% of respondents, respectively. Tencent products feature prominently, with five of the top 15 products in terms of penetration rates.

25.3% of users surveyed said they liked or strongly liked promotional activities, while 47.8% reported a strong dislike.

24.9% of users who had paid fees for online games reported having purchased a virtual item, 52.4% of whom used a virtual item e-commerce website, rather than purchasing directly from another user, due to concerns about transaction security.
