Rumor: Baofeng and CCTV Discuss Merger

Sina Tech, 12/10/09

Feng Xin, CEO of Chinese media player developer Baofeng, responded to recent rumors that his company was in talks with CCTV.com regarding a possible merger, stating that Baofeng and CCTV.com had been discussing a possible merger since Baofeng approached CCTV.com more than a year ago. Feng said, however, that any merger would be a complicated affair, and that as such it was impossible to say whether or not any attempt to take the merger further would be successful. At present, Feng said, Baofeng and CCTV.com have only discussed the possibility of a merger.

A source inside Baofeng revealed that CCTV.com and Baofeng had already begun collaborating. Several days ago, CCTV.com content - including CCTV's popular Xinwen Lianbo evening news program, current affairs programming, and popular lecture series Bai Jia Luntan - began appearing in Baofeng's online TV channels.

Editor's Note: CCTV.com GM Wang Wenbin recently denied having heard anything about a possible merger with Baofeng.
