Rumor: Taiwanese PC ODMs to Build Plants in Chongqing

Netease Tech, 12/24/09

A source close to Taiwanese notebook manufacturer Quanta told foreign media that Quanta is close to signing a memorandum of understanding with the municipal government to build a factory in Chongqing. Production is expected to begin in the first half of 2011, producing notebooks mainly for Hewlett-Packard.

The same source said that Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Inventec will sign a similar agreement with Chongqing in the next two months and will also supply contract manufacturing primarily to HP. The source added that Quanta will begin testing operations in the middle of next year, though investment figures and production volume won't be determined until after the MOUs are signed.

A Chongqing government official involved in the deals said that discussions were still underway, but refused to elaborate. Representatives from Quanta and Inventec declined to comment.
