China Blue High-definition Disc Price Drops 40%

China Business News, 1/06/10

On January 4 in Guangzhou, the China High-definition DVD Industry Association (CHDA) announced that Guangzhou-based optical disc manufacturer Opus Media has begun producing China Blue High-definition Discs (CBHD) in large quantities and will first release 10 Chinese and foreign blockbuster films priced at RMB 28 online and RMB 32 offline.

Liu Shanshan, assistant to the president of Opus Media, disclosed that the company is currently manufacturing 35 film titles in CBHD format, and estimates Opus will release 120 titles this year. The new online price, RMB 28, is 40% lower than the previous RMB 50 per disc and approaches legal DVD prices. Chen Changfeng, PR spokesman for Shinco Electronics, said that as of the end of 2009 over 100 CBHD titles had been released, including 100 Warner Brothers films, and the total is expected to surpass 1,000 titles by the end of 2010.
