China's SARFT Hastens Network Convergence

DVBCN, 2/21/10

In the latest development in three-way network convergence efforts, China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) has called on all cable operators who have yet to complete province-wide integration of their networks to finish all integration within the year, in order to lay the foundation for establishment of a nationwide cable TV network that can compete with the networks of China's three major telecom operators.

Shen Xiangjun, GM of China Cable Television Network Co., Ltd., said that review of a plan to build a national-level cable network had begun at the January meeting of national broadcast authorities.

SARFT will use a phased deployment system for the network, first calling for the completion of provincial network integration efforts within the year, then establishing a national-level cable television network company.
