Shanghai Mobile to Offer CMMB Free through October

Communications Weekly, 4/28/10

The China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), operator of China's CMMB mobile TV services, has jointly announced the commercial launch of mobile TV service on 3G phones in Shanghai, along with partners Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Oriental Pearl (600832.SH). In addition to four national channels including CCTV News, users will also be able to watch the 2010 World Expo and China Business News (CBN) channels.

Shanghai Mobile 3G subscribers will be able to watch CMMB mobile TV programming for free between now and the end of October provided they have a CMMB-enabled handset.

Shanghai Mobile deputy general manager Nie Jing said that there are currently over 30 3G handsets that support CMMB mobile TV, including models from Dopod, Samsung, LG and Lenovo (0992.HK), and expects that number to grow to 60 or 70 this year.
