China Unicom Reaffirms Goal of 10 Mln 3G Subs

At a stockholder meeting on May 12, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) chairman Chang Xiaobing and GM Lu Yimin said that since the introduction of new promotional subscription plans on May 1, Unicom has seen a sharp rise in iPhone sales, and that the operator is confident that it will reach its target of 10 mln 3G users by year's end. Unicom will spend RMB 3-5 bln on 3G smartphone handset subsidies this year, and will roll out seven or eight new 3G smartphone handsets in the near future. ARPU breakdown for Unicom's 3G smartphone handsets has changed from 70% voice services, as in the past, to 70% non-voice services, and talks with Apple regarding partnership on new products are progressing smoothly.

Editor's Note: According to separate reports, Lu Yimin said that Unicom's talks with Apple regarding future partnerships cover, among other things, the possibility of an iPad rollout.
