India Allows Chinese Telecom Equipment After Certification

Sina Tech, 6/02/10

According to foreign media reports, India has resumed allowing imports of Chinese telecom equipment, on the condition that Chinese equipment vendors receive certification by international security audit firms. Reports said that the decision came from top officials in India's prime minister's office, home ministry, telecommunications ministry and intelligence bureau. An anonymous official said that the government would allow self-certification of imported telecom equipment by mobile operators against a bank guarantee given to the communications ministry.

The plan is to be effective for the next 12 months. International security audit firms to provide certification include Canada's Electronic Warfare Associates, U.S.-based Infoguard and Israel's ALTAL Security Consulting.
