Rumor: China Unicom Releases 2G/3G Dual-Number SIM Cards

Sina Tech, 8/19/10

An industry source says China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has begun rolling out dual-number SIM cards in service centers operated by some of its southern provincial subsidiaries. With the new cards, subscribers can maintain both a 3G number and a GSM number.

Like dual-mode, dual-network phones, the dual-number cards allow subscribers to use one mobile phone for two numbers, and to switch freely between the two numbers. The difference is that this ability is enabled by the handset in the case of dual-mode, dual-network phones, and by the card in the case of the new dual-number SIM cards.

Unicom has reportedly not yet decided whether or not to release the dual-number cards nationwide.
