Dianping Files Third Lawsuit against Aibang

Netease Tech, 8/23/10

Chinese online ratings and social bookmarking site Dianping.com told media today that it will bring an RMB 9 mln suit against rival local search provider Aibang.com for unfair competition. The Haidian District People's Court in Beijing has accepted the suit for review. This will mark the third time Dianping has sued Aibang. In addition to the RMB 9 mln in damages, Dianping is also demanding that Aibang issue a public apology on its front page. The new lawsuit avoids the controversial issue of copyright, which had been a focus of the previous two suits.

Dianping senior VP Edward Long said that efforts to win the companies' dispute through copyright litigation had failed to produce results, leading to the latest suit for unfair competition - by which Dianping refers to Aibang's large-scale copying of information from Dianping for profit. Long expressed confidence that Dianping would win its suit.
